Freshwater Aquarium Sand

Help! Accidently Bought Marine Sand For Freshwater Aquarium?

UGH! I just ordered a 20 lb bag of caribsea moonlight sand for my 10 gallon Freshwater aquarium. I looked at the info on the sand and it said it was marine sand? Will it still be safe for my guppies, rasboras, and tetras?! :S

Safe, yes, ideal, no. Marine sand will raise your pH and increase hardness. The fish you mentioned come from slightly acidic(low pH) soft water. However, a stable pH is MUCH more desirable than the so-called “correct” pH. If you haven’t opened it, take it back. If you opened it already though, I’d go ahead and use it, it’s not a huge deal. DO wash(rinse) it well though. You want to get all the “dust” out. If you don’t, it will cloud your water for days and depending on what kind of filter you have, MIGHT damage your filter.
